Sometimes it feels like we are powerless to make a difference for the better. Choosing Fairtrade is one of the many simple ways in which, by making a positive choice, we can all make a difference.
Fairtrade is a great way in which small choices can make a big difference. When you see the Fairtrade Mark it means that producers in developing countries get decent working conditions, wages and terms of trade. Fairtrade products and ethically developed, ensure a better deal for producers and are a chance for consumers to make a difference. If it doesn’t have the Fairtrade Mark it isn’t Fairtrade! The University and AUSA were awarded Fairtrade Status in 2007. The University and AUSA are committed to making Fairtrade products available and to making it as easy as possible to buy Fairtrade so if you see something that you think should be Fairtrade and isn’t let us know!
Fairtrade products are available all over campus so it couldn’t be easier to choose Fairtrade. Tiki Cafe, Eat and the Hub are just some of the places where delicious Fairtrade products are on sale, including chocolate, tea and coffee – definitely student staples! If you are really keen you can even become a Friend of Fairtrade and get up-to-date news about Fairtrade products, offers and events.
The Fairtrade Foundation is the independent non-profit organisation that licenses use of the FAIRTRADE Mark on products in the UK in accordance with internationally agreed Fairtrade standards. The Foundation was established in 1992 by CAFOD, Christian Aid, Oxfam, Traidcraft and the World Development Movement, later joined by the National Federation of Women’s Institutes.
The foundation’s vision is of a world in which justice and sustainable development are at the heart of trade structures and practices so that everyone, through their work, can maintain a decent and dignified livelihood and develop their full potential.
To achieve this vision, Fairtrade seeks to transform trading structures and practices in favour of the poor and disadvantaged. By facilitating trading partnerships based on equity and transparency, Fairtrade contributes to sustainable development for marginalised producers, workers and their communities. Through demonstration of alternatives to conventional trade and other forms of advocacy, the Fairtrade movement empowers citizens to campaign for an international trade system based on justice and fairness.
