Race To Paris

Race to Paris 2012- Starts 23rd March, 9am.

Did you hear about Jailbreak and never got around to entering a team? Feel you need a break before the start of your last term? Well the Students’ Charities Campaign is hosting the smaller version of our large Jailbreak event, Charities Race to Paris.

What Is It?

The idea is simple, competitors in teams of two or three, have to try to get from Aberdeen to Paris in the shortest time possible, without flying and without spending any money.

Official T Shirt

The idea of the official T-shirt is to make your journey to Paris easier as it identifies you as someone taking part in the race. Teams in similar events in the past have also used the T-shirt to advertise their sponsors.

The cost is £8.00 and must be paid in cash at the Charities Office on or before Friday 18 March 2011 for your T Shirt to be ordered. If you would like to order the official T-shirt please email a.heaney.10@aberdeen.ac.uk as soon as possible. If we do not hear from you we will assume you a no longer wanting a T Shirt.

Please do not order the T Shirt through the Choose a Challenge website as they do not currently stock Race to Paris T Shirts.

Sponsorship

Minimum sponsorship is £60 per team.

Donations can be taken via www.justgiving.com or collected and taken to the charities office at The Butchart Centre.

All sponsorship money raised must be donated to the ASCC.

How will the event run? The event will start at Kings College, Aberdeen at 9am on 23 March 2011. Teams will then make their way to Paris without spending any money on travel. Competitors can request free travel from transport operators on the day or in advance and may also hitchhike if they wish.

The finishing point will be beneath the Eiffel Tower and first team to arrive there will be declared the winner. The event will continue until all teams have crossed the finish line or retired from the race.

We recommend contacting hotels in advance, as they may wish to sponsor you by offering complimentary accommodation, as has been the case for students taking part in similar charity events in the past such as ‘Jailbreak’.

Returning from Paris

You may choose to book your onward travel to Scotland or elsewhere in advance. Airlines operating flights to Scotland from Paris’ Airports include Ryanair, Easyjet, Flybe and Air France. Eurostar offer rail connections from Paris to several UK cities via London. Eurolines offer coach services from Paris to London.

ASCC Official Rules:

1. The objective is to raise money for charity by getting to Paris, France as quickly as possible after the race starts.

2. You are deemed to be competing in the race from when you depart Kings College, Aberdeen, United Kingdom at 9am on 25 March 2011 until either you have reached the finish at the base of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France or have chosen to retire from the race (whichever is first).

3. All competitors, competing in the race must travel in teams. For safety reasons, these must consist of a minimum of two and maximum of three competitors who must travel together at all times whilst competing in the race.

4. Use of your own transport whilst competing in the race is not permitted

5. Air travel used whilst competing in the race is not permitted

6. Spending money on transport, which is used whilst competing in the race, is not permitted

7. Having someone other than a transport operator pay/contribute to paying for transport, which is used whilst competing in the race, is not permitted.

8. Use of “airmiles” or any other similar loyalty schemes to pay for transport, which is used whilst competing in the race, is not permitted.

9. Whilst you are permitted to spend money on food any other non transport expenses; if you wish, you are also permitted to request free meals from restaurants, fast food outlets, bakeries etc.

10. If you wish, you are permitted to request sponsorship in the form of complimentary accommodation from hotels, youth hostels etc. to stay during or after the race.

11. Each competitor must carry a mobile phone valid for use throughout the UK and Europe. The mobile should be fully charged on departure.

12. This event is organised by the Aberdeen Students’ Charities Campaign (ASCC), Scottish Charity Number, SC008700.

13. It is your own responsibility to ensure that the travel insurance you take out prior to departure, regardless of whether gained via your Choose a Challenge registration or by your own means, is adequate. The ASCC bear no responsibility.

14. It is your own responsibility to take out a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) prior to departure. The ASCC bear no responsibility.

15. It is your own responsibility to ensure that you meet all passport and visa requirements for all the travel you undertake. The ASCC bear no responsibility.

16. It is your responsibility to organise transport from Paris, France onwards to your final destination.

17. Whilst you are permitted to request return tickets from transport operators, you also have the choice of booking and paying for your onward journey from Paris, France in advance.

18. The ASCC bear no responsibility in the event that if you miss or are unable to take an onward journey.

19. The ASCC bear no responsibility in the event that you unable to use accommodation you have arranged in Paris, France.

20. The ASCC bear no responsibility for arranging and/or paying for any transport expenses you may incur as a result of your participation in the race.

21. The ASCC bear no responsibility for arranging your accommodation.

22. Participants who complete their registration prior to the “guaranteed accommodation deadline” will be temporarily exempt from rule 21 and provided with a one off offer of accommodation in Paris, France, which is the responsibility of the participant to book and pay for. Once the accommodation offer has been provided, Rule 21 will again apply and no further assistance will be provided with arranging accommodation.

23. The ASCC bear no responsibility for paying for any accommodation expenses you may incur.

24. Competitors should act within the law at all times.

25. Competitors should not put the safety of themselves, other competitors or the public in jeopardy at any time.

26. You are permitted to retire from the race at any time, at which point you may choose to continue, at your own expense, to Paris, France or to your final destination. Retiring will however result in disqualification from the race. You should contact the ASCC to let them know of your decision to retire from the race.

27. Competitors must also agree to the terms and conditions stated by choose a challenge when registering for the event.
