Aikido

Captain's email: a.brovkin.08@aberdeen.ac.uk
Club Captain: Anastasia Brovkin

Aikido is a non-competitive, non-aggressive, effective martial art that is also a lot of fun. It teaches techniques to use harmony to safely immobilise an armed or unarmed attacker, regardless of their size or strength. Aikido, meaning "way of harmony", enables the student to develop their own self-awareness, timing, posture and confidence - all of which are transferable life skills. Sessions cost £2.50 and last around two hours. No equipment or experience is necessary. Aikido is practiced bare foot and only loose fitting clothing is required to begin with. We are a friendly club which welcomes people of any level. Training, as well as regular social events, enables you to make lasting friendships throughout your time at university. We look forward to seeing you on the mat.

With a whole new committee and training structure coming into place, this year is shaping up to be one of our most successful yet. So if you'd like to get involved in competitive hockey and great socials - join AUWHC!

Ju-Jitsu

Captain’s email: thomasgeorgiou@hotmail.com

Club Captain: Thomas Georgiou

Imagine a sport that teaches self-confidence, as well as self-defence. Imagine a sport that can introduce you to the world of martial arts and teach you a range of interesting, yet practical, techniques. Imagine a sport practised by fun, friendly people who are perfectly happy to exercise in their pyjamas. But what is this wondrous sport, I hear you cry? Let me introduce you to the world of Ju Jitsu...

Apart from all the normal physical advantages (keeping fit and healthy, yadda yadda yadda), there's a great social side. Trips to the pub after training, BBQ’s (when the weather allows!), Christmas and Halloween parties, the Torcher Parade... All offer a brilliant opportunity to get to know club members that wee bit better. We're an especially friendly bunch (just have a look at the Gallery page on our website).

Judo

Captain’s email: nicola.mcilraith.08@aberdeen.ac.uk

Club Captain: Nicola Mcllraith

Judo is a martial arts that demands physical skills & mental discipline and can take years to master. It is also a fun, Olympic, sport, suitable for all ages, shapes and sizes; and both genders.Judo originated in Japan in the 1880’s, when Dr Jigoro Kano adapted Ju Jitsu, a martial art used by the Samurai & Feudal Warrior class, and created Judo.By gripping the Judo suit (judogi) Judo players (Judoka) use the forces of balance, power & movement to try to “throw” each other using a recognised throwing technique (Nage waza).

Judo is great for developing fitness, strength, flexibility, co-ordination and balance & can help channel aggression.

Players can be graded either through competitive fighting or by demonstrating techniques, their grade being indicated by the colour of their belt (White to Black).

Whether you have practised before, are looking for a new challenge, or simply want a “taster” come along to our twice-weekly session at the Sports Village.  Kits can be provided for beginners.

We also hold several social nights which are always great fun.

Kendo

Captain’s email: matthew.macgregor.10@aberdeen.ac.uk

Club Captain: Matthew MacGregor

First impressions of Kendo are of a noisy, aggressive and violent full-contact martial art. Kendo is certainly dynamic, but a little study will soon reveal a high level of skill and concentration, together with a grace and physical agility that any choreographer would appreciate.    Kendo is a physically and mentally challenging activity that combines strong martial arts values with sporting-like physical elements.  Kendo embodies the essence of Japanese fighting arts.  Around 8 million people world-wide practice Kendo. British Kendo Association, Aberdeen University Kendo Club was formed in 2006 following the success of Aberdeen Kendo Club.  We regularly compete in national tournaments and receive frequent visits from high ranking Japanese Kendo teachers.  We also have regular social events, often joining with other martial arts clubs.  Kendo can be practiced by people of all ages, and is enjoyed by men and women from all walks of life as mental strength rather than physical strength is more important.  All the necessary equipment can be loaned from the club until you are ready to buy your own.

Lacrosse Men

Captain’s email: m.grotvedt.08@aberdeen.ac.uk

Club Captain: Morten Grotvedt

'A cross between American football and Shinty but played off the ground with sticks with nets on the end!?!' – That was how lacrosse was explained to me when I started University. I'm not attempting my own description except to say 'It’s the sport they play in American Pie!'  Branded as 'the quickest game on two legs' Lacrosse is gaining fans all over the world. Every year we have a number of opportunities for travel with the team; team tour is an experience like no other! In recent years we have travelled to Latvia, Hungary, Slovakia, Germany and Ireland. Those who have attended a club tour rarely pass up the opportunity to attend another one. We welcome all levels of ability from beginners to experts. No previous experience is necessary and we can provide equipment for those who do not have their own. All you need to bring along is a T-shirt, sports shorts and a pair of trainers.

Lifesaving

Captain’s email: j.mackinnon.08@aberdeen.ac.uk

Club Captain: Jasmine Mackinnon

Can you see yourself as the next David Hasselhoff or Pamela Anderson? Yes? Then Lifesaving is the sport for you! Believe me we have heard it all before, “How can lifesaving be a sport? If you don’t drown do you win?”! The best way to find out is to simply come along to one of our training sessions! We are part of the British University Lifesaving Club Association (BULSCA) and compete in the University league.  We also attend the RLSS National Speed Championships and have seen some club members finishing top 10 for their event, proving some of our team capable of competing for Scotland. As well as competing we teach basic Life Support which works towards several lifeguarding and lifesaving qualifications including Bronze Medallion, Award of Merit, Life Support, and Bronze Cross (if you can brave the North Sea!).  Our pool sessions involve water based rescues and competitive lifesaving as well as improving swimming technique and stamina.  A large part of training, especially for competitions, involves acting out emergency incidents so if you like a bit of drama then you will fit right in! Don’t be scared if you have never done anything like this before (most of us hadn’t) or aren’t a particularly strong swimmer, come along and have a go.

Mountain Biking

Captain’s email: c.dunn.08@aberdeen.ac.uk

Club Captain: Chris Dunn

Come and join us on one of our regular club rides on a Wednesday afternoon.  We cater for all abilities and ride both cross country (XC) and downhill (DH).  Whether it's your first ride or you're an experienced racer, we have something to offer you. For those XC riders, we have a good range of trails in the area to suit all abilities.  Joining the club is a perfect opportunity for you to discover new and exciting routes it's taken us years to find!  Riding with some of our experienced members will help you to push your limits and develop new skills – and of course give you some cracking stories for the pub! For the thrill seekers out there DH is maybe your thing.  Over the years we've ridden and raced all over the country.  We've recently returned from a 3 day stint with Farmer Jack in Wales but who knows where we'll be heading next? We also have our own Freelap timing system which is a great way to train for the annual BUCS DH and XC races, as well as have our own mini races in the woods.  Think you can set a new track record?  Well, there's only one way to find out and that's to join!

Netball

Captain’s email: f.lamb.08@aberdeen.ac.uk

Club Captain: Francesca Lamb

The netball club is a fantastic club to be a part of.  It has grown in size over the past few years and its reputation is growing along with it.  The club now has four teams, which shows how much the interest has increased over time.  3 of the teams play in both BUCS and local leagues, while the 4ths still only play in the BUCS league, so there is plenty of room for new players to join a team and play for fun or a bit more seriously.  The girls in the club are friendly, loud and lots of fun! This year will play host to, hopefully, lots of nights out and tour over Easter (which is the best fun you will ever have!) So if you want to meet new people, play a team sport and have some fun, head over to the Netball stand during the Freshers Fayre.

Club Captain: Jamie Chalmers

Want to work hard, get fit, make new friends and enjoy a spectacular social life? Then joining the A.U.R.F.C is an absolute must! Play in one of our 4 teams in the BUCS leagues every Wednesday or represent the University in the local Saturday league. If you have the desire and talent you can quickly progress to Scottish Universities level - several of our squad did last year! Having won ‘Club of the Year 07/08' and winning the Scottish Hydro Electric Plate at Murrayfield, you'll be a part of the most successful club in the University. Also, our 1st XV recently got promoted to the BUCS 1st division and our Saturday Team to the Scottish Hydro Electric Caledonia Division One so you'll be competing at the highest level. If you think that the training and playing may prove too much for you, then test your staying power by joining in our many social events, such as 'The King Street Shuffle', the Christmas Dinner and the end of season Rugby Ball. Whether you are playing or injured, this season you will have the chance to take part in SRU run coaching and refereeing courses, which will not only enhance your knowledge of the game but look great on your CV! Looking good and feeling good is a big part of any sport, which is why we hope to launch a new range of kit for the rugby club this season! No matter what standard you are, there's something for everyone at the A.U.R.F.C. Come along to training and see for yourself!

Sailing

Captain’s email: johanna.wallin.08@aberdeen.ac.uk

Club Captain: Johanna Wallin

Information: AUSC is a very active club; sailing and socialising in equal measure! We cater to all levels of sailing ability, from people who have never seen a boat before, to national champions. Our multiple RYA Dinghy and Senior Instructors, and Team Racing Coaches ensure that all members get the support and instruction that they need, and that our sailing is always safe and fun. We own six Fireflies (and some old laser IIs) which are kept and sailed at Forfar sailing club. We also have a collection of wetsuits and buoyancy aids for members to use, so you don’t even need your own gear. This year the club has teams competing in SUSA (Scottish Universities Sailing Association) team racing leagues, which gives team members the opportunity to sail against other Scottish universities, gaining experience, friends, and hangovers. The club has also a strong Yachting agenda, last year making the Worlds in France after competing in and winning SUSA Yachting. Socially AUSC is unrivalled, we meet at least once a week at our sponsor pub, the Blue Lamp on Gallowgate, and it always ends up being a great night.

Club Captain: Robert Best

Do you want to try something new? Try something unknown but very easy to learn? Play great and exciting sport? Have great socials with good banter and meet lots of new people? Then PLAY SHINTY. The Aberdeen University Shinty Club is one of the oldest clubs in the University.  It is a traditional Scottish sport, similar in ways to field hockey, its simple rules and techniques make it an enjoyable and quick sport to learn. The club prides itself on its openness and friendliness towards complete beginners and as a sport is hugely rewarding to learn.  Every year complete novices surprise themselves with how quickly they have progressed in the sport. With a Men’s and Women’s team who play in University and National leagues we are an active club with regular training and social nights.

The Squash Club at Aberdeen University has a great reputation for being a friendly and social club that certainly knows how to have a good time. We are always interested in welcoming new people to the club, from complete beginners to more advanced players, and members always highlight the sociable training sessions and nights out as an enjoyable aspect of the club. Those looking forward to the more competitive side of club life will be glad to hear that Aberdeen University has three mens teams and one or two ladies teams (depending on numbers). These teams play regular matches throughout the year against clubs around Aberdeen as well as other University teams. The teams also have the chance to play at the annual Scottish University Squash Championships at Herriot Watt University in Edinburgh. New members will find it very easy to fit in and make new friends at the club and the informal training sessions mean you get the chance to play a range of different abilities.

Sub Aqua

Captain’s email: k.padgett.09@aberdeen.ac.uk

Club Captain: Kelsey Padgett

The AUSAC is a special branch of the British Sub Aqua Club (BSAC) and has many members and instructors…importantly, we can teach you to dive! The club recruits new divers each year, through ‘try dives’ at King’s pool on campus. Not only does the club welcome new trainees but we also welcome experienced divers from other clubs and organisations with crossover courses and lots of diving! The club also organises many skill development courses throughout the year, including VHF radio operation, boat handling and oxygen administration just to name a few. We make diving available on a regular basis (weather permitting), for some of the cheapest diving available – ideal for the student budget! We have a fair amount of kit that we hire out at a very low cost, not to mention our wonderful RIB! Last year the club has dived in Oban, Kyle of Lochalsh, Lochaline and St. Abbs for week- and weekend- long trips as well as day trips to many great local sites.

AUTTC is the club to join! We have had continual success in the last two years during which the club has been in this new setup. We are fighting for the Scottish University Championships, with two Men’s and a Ladies’ team, after coming 2nd in the Men’s league twice consecutively and being listed as first in the Ladies’ league who reached the top 8 in the British University competition this year.  We hope that you can make a difference and help us push on and continue with this success which we have enjoyed lately. However do not be scared by this apparent competitiveness, players of all levels are welcome to join and play what is truly one of the most exciting sports on the planet, along with enjoying the social side of the club too. Come along and try it out, you’ll never want to do anything else again.

Taekwon-Do is a Korean martial art, known for its jumping and flying techniques and kicks. But Taekwon-Do also includes punches, blocks, self-defence and sparring. If you would like to find out more, or if you already have some experience, feel free to join any of our training sessions. New students can try out Taekwon-Do for free for two weeks! This gives you plenty of time to decide if Taekwon-Do is for you, or not. Students are able to progress at their own pace. Please make sure to bring a bottle of water, you will appreciate it. Of course we have plenty of socials every year, including pub crawls, Christmas dinner, parties, BBQ, and our annual roadtrip weekend. Just check out some of the pictures on facebook (look for “Aberdeen University Taekwon-Do Club”).  If you have any questions please get in touch.

Club Captain: Kerry MacKay

Facebook: Aberdeen University Tai Chi Club

Tai Chi Chuan has something to offer everyone.

The soft, flowing movements produce many health benefits such as improved circulation, opening and strengthening of the joints and stimulation of the nervous system. These coincide with therapeutic qualities and develop improved flexibility, relaxation and focus of both the mind and body. After time, people find that they are less tired at the end of a class than at the beginning.  Many people simply enjoy the physical and mental challenge of Tai Chi Chuan and the many reasons people come to practise Tai Chi Chuan ensures that the class always has a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere. It is an inexpensive way to improve and protect one’s health and our class is open to all.

Tennis

Captains email: g.cook.08@aberdeen.ac.uk

Club captain: Gill Cook

Be you a keen and dedicated player or someone who just enjoys battering a ball around a court every so often then retiring to the pub for a stiff drink; the Aberdeen University Tennis Club has it all. For season 2011-2012 there will be five tennis teams; 2 men's teams and 2 women's that compete in the BUCS national leagues and a Grampian team. The newly formed Grampian team is a mixed team that plays matches on a Tuesday night (other teams play on a wednesday afternoon) so this gives an opportunity for players that can't play on a wednesday to get involved. By having 5 teams teams we hope to give all standards of player a bash at match play. Don't hesitate to ask the captains to play! If the thought of competitive tennis make you feel nauseous don't worry, the club prides itself on our nights out. From dress up nights to pub crawls to the good old sociable drink that lands you in bed by half 9 with a cold portion of chips the club welcomes all who want a good time and to make many friends. Our Christmas and End of Season meal acts as a formal excuse to stumble around Aberdeen and always attracts a good crowd to provide for another excellent night on the tiles.

Trampoline

Captain’s email:  e.r.wharton.09@aberdeen.ac.uk

Club Captain: Emma Wharton

Come along and find out that there is more to bouncing than a garden trampoline!  Our qualified coaches will teach you everything that you need to know...from complete beginner to elite level.  Our professionally run body conditioning sessions provide great exercise and are invaluable for training, not just in trampolining but also for those training in other sports.  We have a great social side to the club and regularly hold a variety of events.  The Club attends the four Scottish Universities Sport league competitions and there is a chance to go to BUCS as well.  We don’t just stay in Scotland though.  We send teams and supporters to the annual Manchester and Irish Student Trampoline Opens.  But don’t panic...you don’t have to compete if you don’t want to.  You can come along for a bit of exercise or just the social events. However your membership fee covers your entry cost to competitions so all you need is money for travel.  All are welcome...come along and give it a go!

Club Captain: Hannah Newton

Facebook: Positive Mojo - Aberdeen University Ultimate Frisbee

Information: Ultimate Frisbee is a non-contact, team sport that is played throughout the world. It combines the best features of football, basketball, American football and netball, and the simplicity of the rules means it’s easy and fun for newcomers to pick up. It can be played indoors or outdoors, where it is played on either grass or on sand. Aberdeen University Ultimate Frisbee Club plays on all three of these surfaces. We compete in both university and non-university tournaments throughout the year, most of which anyone who wants to play can do so, in Open, Mixed and Women’s competitionsIf you’ve never seen “Ultimate” played before then come along to a practice and we’ll teach you everything you need to know! And you don’t need to be good at sport either; some of our members simply play for the social side, not to compete at a high level. If you would like to learn more about “Ultimate” then www.whatisultimate.com has more details and the basic rules.

Underwater Hockey

Captain’s email: hbownesssmith@gmail.com

Club Captain: Hannah Bowness Smith

Underwater Hockey is exciting, something different, a great way to keep fit and the ultimate team game.

It is played on the bottom of a swimming pool using snorkelling gear, a lead puck and a short stick in order to manoeuvre the puck into the goal.  Teams consist of six people in the water with four rolling substitutes and players most hold their breath and descend to the bottom in order to control the puck. We are also very active socially with many club nights out held throughout the year as well as regular pub trips after training, and our new social secretary is keen to do even more this year. We even host our own competition at the end of the first term - know as the Gowland Cup.  This is a great opportunity to experience competition for the first time, as well as to meet players from other universities, and it is always followed by a good night out on the town with everyone. If your a competitive person; if you just wanna have fun; if you love being in the water but are fed up of swimming lengths; or if you just want to try something new - then come play Underwater Hockey.
