Sports Union History

The Sports Union was originally known as the Athletics Association and in 1999 we became part of The Students Association as the Sports Council.  In 2002 we became The Sports Union.

  • We joined the Students Association in 2001
  • We have over 50 sports clubs
  • We have 3500 students competing at sport at some level
  • In 2009 we move to our new £28 million sports centre
  • Superteams is the largest one day student event in Scotland
  • Granite City Challenge is the largest one day varsity match in Britain
  • Aberdeen University are unbeaten in the ten years it has been running
  • Aberdeen University smashed the course record in last years varsity boat race beating RGU
  • Aberdeen University have only ever lost the varsity boat race once in its history
  • At the 2004 Commonwealth Games Aberdeen University had two students representing Scotland at shooting
  • At the 2004 Commonwealth Games ex student Neil Stirton won a silver medal for shooting
