On University Rankings

You are probably all well aware of the fact that the University of Aberdeen was awarded the title of Scottish University of the Year 2019 - if you missed it please take your obligatory picture with the enormous banner at William Guild right now. Congratulations in this place to all the amazing, hardworking and enthusiastic staff and students who make our time at Aberdeen University worthwhile.

At our last Environment & Ethics Committee meeting, we thought back about another ranking that was released earlier this year, but did not make it on any monitors, banners or mugs around campus: the People & Planet University League. It’s somewhat unsurprising, however, seeing as Aberdeen only ranked 129 out of 154, and was awarded a FAIL.

It’s not to say that all is bad - we scored 80/100 on Environmental Sustainability: Policy & Strategy, which basically means we have an environmental policy, and some topics are being worked on, e.g. waste management, transport and sustainable procurement of products.

Most importantly, we believe that any shortcomings are due to decisions that are being made on the highest level of management. As People & Planet pointed out, no senior manager has Sustainability in their portfolio, and overall the number of staff tasked with these issues is very limited, and understandably these few staff who are dealing with Sustainability issues have incredibly busy calendars.
From our own extensive experience, there is no lack of amazing projects that are run by staff and students alike to promote sustainability. It's therefore quite clear that the University has to seriously invest not just in sustainable projects and initiatives, but in staff that are tasked specifically to deal with the issue.

However, we are positive that the new Senior Management Team, with Principal George Boynes and newly-hired Vice-Principals will take a look at the University Green League, realise that it’s about time we don’t fail next years table and get to work on improving our University.

PS: Meanwhile, we have taken it upon ourselves to look particularly at the Ethical Investment part of the problem … keep an eye on this space for more information about Fossil Free, and sign our petition in the meantime: https://campaigns.gofossilfree.org/petitions/university-of-aberdeen-divest-from-fossil-fuels?fbclid=IwAR0qBTZ1kKI1F88coJZ0z_DxbqS4SeLRVJ2Br4oLrtMjLTOJyu0A0zgVI0U.
