Divest Now and Go Fossil Free
If it is wrong to wreck the climate, then it is wrong to profit from that wreckage. UK Universities anc colleges support the fossil fuel industry through £5.2bn investments in their companies.
So why divestment as a strategy?
Divestment is the act of removing money from a particualr fund - in essence, it is the opposite of investment!
The Fossil Free divestment movement is already winning. So far, campaigns at 65 institutions have gained 32,000 signatures of support.
The University of Glasgow has announced that it will divest its £129 million endowment from fossil fuels. Since then, the campaign has exploded with five more victories; University of London SOAS, Bedfordshire Uni, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Oxford Uni, Edinburgh Uni and Warwick Uni.
Here's the maths:
We have 5x more fossil fuel reserves than we can burn in order to keep Global Warming below 2 degrees - and yet, energy companies across the world are continuing to drill for new reserves.
We think it's time to revoke the moral license from the wreckage of our planet - and we are asking our institutions to do the same!
Students across the world are asking their universities to move their money away from fossil fuels - and so are we! Want to find out more?
