Introduction

Hello! My name is Clare Okafor, and I’m a Computer Science student at the University of Aberdeen. Beyond academics, I am passionate about leadership and community engagement, I currently serve as vice chair of the student council and have held roles as a School Prefect and Youth Leader. Volunteering, whether at the Zero Waste Shop or in local initiatives, has taught me the value of listening to diverse voices and taking action. I am committed to ensuring every student feels represented, supported, and empowered.

What are your three priorities for the year?

My three priorities for the year are:

Enhanced Student Support – Improve access to mental health resources, tutoring, and mentorship programs, ensuring students feel supported academically and personally.

Sustainability & Campus Initiatives – Promote eco-friendly practices, including more recycling points, awareness campaigns, and initiatives that reduce our campus carbon footprint.

Community Engagement & Events – Organize inclusive events and workshops that encourage students from all backgrounds to connect, share ideas, and build a stronger, more united university community.

What unique skill/knowledge can you bring to the role to stand out from the other candidates?

I bring a combination of strong leadership experience, technical expertise, and organizational skills. My background in programming, app development, and project management allows me to introduce innovative digital solutions to improve student life. Coupled with my hands-on volunteering experience and active involvement in student leadership, I can translate ideas into actionable outcomes efficiently and effectively.

What do you think is the biggest issue that students are facing at the moment and how do you plan to tackle it?

I believe one of the biggest challenges students face is balancing academic pressure with personal well-being. Many students struggle silently with stress, mental health issues, and time management. My approach will be twofold:

Advocacy: Work with the Students’ Union to increase awareness, reduce stigma, and ensure accessible mental health support.

Practical Solutions: Implement peer support networks, skill-building workshops on stress management, and collaborative feedback channels so students can voice concerns and influence decisions that impact their wellbeing.
