POSTPONED Tangleha Trip

You will be aware of the situation surrounding the latest developments regarding coronavirus COVID-19, which has now been declared a pandemic. 

Following recent guidance, we’ve have taken the decision to recommend postponing all AUSA events until further notice.

 

 

 

Do you want to find out about using and maintaining low-impact outdoor cooking equipment? This two-day course takes place at Tangleha Artists' Collective, who combine creativity and sustainability to explore all aspects of living well. This is embodied in our venue, Tangleha House, just up the coast from the beautiful nature reserve of St Cyrus. You will learn how to use, look after and repair a rocket stove and cob oven, both of which use wood efficiently to cook delicious outdoor meals. Please read the event description below before purchasing your ticket!

What you will learn:

- The principles of a rocket stove: how and why it works.

- Safe use of a rocket stove.

- How to repair a damaged rocket stove.

- How to make cob (a mixture of clay and sand used to insulate the oven)

- Planning and laying foundations for an oven

- All about producing and using firewood

 

What to expect:

 

Saturday

8:50 for 9:00 Meet at Aberdeen Union Square bus station

10:20 Arrive at Johnshaven – walk to Tangleha

11:20 Arrive at Tangleha

11:30 Introduction to rocket stoves and cob ovens

12:30 Lunch

13:30 Afternoon session – firewood and coppice, safe use of rocket stoves

16:00 Finish

18:00 Dinner

 

Overnight accommodation in Tangleha House.

1:00 Afternoon session - making a model, laying bricks, repairing an oven

Accommodation and meals during the course are provided. All meals served will be vegetarian and vegan, however, if you have any allergies or dietary requirements you would like to make us aware of, please email abergreen@abdn.ac.uk by the 5th March.

Accommodation for the night is provided. A mixture of beds, sofa beds, mattresses, and camping mats are available. Please let us know if you will need one of the softer options. Please bring a sleeping bag if you can, but some bedding will be available if you can’t. All beds are in mixed, shared rooms, and we are unable to provide private bedrooms. With ample prior notice, we can consider space allocation.

 

Transport from Aberdeen is by local bus and you will be expected to pay for your own travel on the day. Please bring cash to make things easier.

We will be meeting at the Aberdeen Bus Station (in Union Square) and taking the X7 from Stance 3 at 9:05. Please arrive 15 minutes early to check in with the group. If you are late we will not be able to wait for you.

The group will travel together to Johnshaven from where we will be walking for 3.5 km to the final destination. Please note that this is a Grade C+ walk, with some parts on unsurfaced paths. You will need to wear weather and terrain appropriate footwear and clothing. We will return the same way on Sunday, arriving back in Aberdeen at 17:50

Please note that we can only accommodate up to 12 people on this trip, so booking early is recommended! Tickets are on sale until the 5th March.

Log into the AUSA website. Please log in using an email address that you check regularly. Click to add a ticket to your basked. Head to the upper left-hand corner of the screen to check out. Confirm your purchase. Only one ticket per person can be purchased, and you must be a member of the Secret Garden Society to come on to this trip.
