P/A Society Astronomy Talk

Online

Monday 01 February 2021 at 7pm - 8:30pm

Hey everyone! On February 1st the Physics and Astronomy Society will be having an astronomy talk at 7pm (uk time) on zoom. It will be given by Klara Karlsmose who works as a physics teacher in Denmark and is an excellent speaker. The talk is taken from her master's thesis on stellar surface convection (ie on the movement of matter in the outer layers of stars), and if you are interested in astronomy or know someone who is, then we hope to see you at a talk which will not only teach you about the inner workings of stars but also about how (some) astronomers do their research. More information will be posted later in the week.

Talk description:
The primary source of information we have for studying stellar objects is the light that they emit. The emergent spectral light is formed through absorption and emission of photons moving outwards through the star, and will be highly influenced by the internal structure and chemical composition of the star. The light thus carries crucial information about the physical conditions in the stellar interior. In order to interpret this information, we need theoretical stellar models.
This talk will discuss the inner workings of stars with a focus on how we use theoretical stellar models as a way of interpreting stellar observations.
