Do you stay in Purpose Built Student Accommodation? We need your help!
We know that 2021 is a year which has begun with more uncertainty for students – particularly when it comes to the situation with accommodation. With ever-changing rules, and different information coming from different sources, it can be hard to know exactly what the situation is.
The officer team at AUSA are committed to improving the accommodation situation for all students at the University of Aberdeen – but we need YOUR help to make things better as quickly as possible.
We believe that the rules around student accommodation should be simple –No student should be paying to stay somewhere that they haven’t been legally allowed to travel back to.
We’ve already been working with NUS and others to achieve justice for students:
- For students living in university-run halls, refunds have been secured for the 25th January onward. We’re currently in talks with the university to see how this support can be expanded.
- 1000s of emails sent to MSP’s urging them to back additional support for students.
- £1.1bn in extra funding for the sector announced during the 2021 Scottish Budget.
- £20 Million in additional student support across Scotland.
That’s why we’re launching our #RefundTheRent campaign today. We want to hear from any students in Purpose Built Student Accommodation or who rent from a private landlord about your experiences with trying to get your rent refunded fairly.
To help us win this together, please take just a few moments to fill out our very short survey, which you can find here.
We will use the information you provide us to inform our campaign and to build a picture of the situation right across Aberdeen.
In the meantime, if you need any support, you can view our FAQ and advice page here.
You can also find more about your rights as a renter here.
Finally, if you want to get in touch with us, please don’t hesitate to drop us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org. You can also get directly in touch with me, your Vice President for Welfare, at email@example.com
2020 and 2021 have been hard enough for students without the added worries and uncertainty caused by paying rent on a flat that you can’t even travel to. Together, we will win for students, and get a fair deal for all student renters in Aberdeen.
Yours in solidarity,
Louise Henrard - VP for Welfare
