ASCN is a pacifist student group with a multifaceted approach to environmental activism, connecting with students through discussions groups, social media and awareness/ educational campaigns throughout the year. We plan to strengthen our movement by collaborating with other environmental groups and student societies on campus, hence, reaching out to a wider community. We advocate for systematic, structural changes by lobbying the local and central governments, but also Aberdeen University Students’ Association and the University of Aberdeen’s Administration, all the while holding the status of an autonomous student group.
ASCN was set up by a group of students who were inspired by the powerful and direct protests made by young people against climate inaction across the world. In other words, we were created in response to the climate emergency the world is currently experiencing. We believe that youth-led climate action can be used as an effective influencing tool for national and global environmental policies in order to prevent the catastrophic effects of climate change. The United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change- composed of some of the greatest scientists of our time- have told the world that we need “rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society”; we at ASCN believe that the youth is a key driver for change in this struggle for the future of humanity. We have a moral imperative to protect the heritage of our ancestors and safeguard the future of the generations to come, this is Aberdeen Student Climate Network’s commitment.
