Welcome to anyone interested in Aerospace!

As a society, we have the goal of advancing our knowledge of all things aerospace and empowering people to bring their own fresh ideas to the table and support them as a society to make them a reality.

Due to the varied nature of our projects, students from all disciplines are highly welcome as aerospace is an interdisciplinary domain. Even if you are not in engineering/computing science and are simply interested in aerospace, you are always welcome to join. The more people in our society, the further we can go.

What we're working on

We currently have 4 projects on the go.

  1. The main project is our fixed wing UAV which is a huge undertaking and a huge thing - with a wingspan of over two meters.
  2. A quadcopter project: We needed something a little more EEE/Computer Science focused so we decided to develop a quadcopter from the ground up without using standard, off the shelf quadcopter components. So the avionics and control systems will be programmed in house by us and we will use as few non-standard libraries as possible.
  3. We're exploring the possibility of creating a helical antenna with the intention to track an earth facing weather satellite and get a live picture of the earth from the satelite as it passes over.
  4. Lastly, in a joint venture between the Robotics Society and Aerospace, we are developing a robotic arm as a development platform to use for future projects. We may even try and get it to do the tracking for us on the helical antenna.

How we work

We have weekly lab/workshop sessions where all team members will be actively working on projects. If there are any projects that look interesting to you, come along or get in touch to find out more. We're also very keen to support people who want to start their own projects and provide what assistance we can to make them happen. So if you've got an idea that's aerospace related and want to make it happen? Come and tell us about it and we'll do our best as a society to make it happen.

The only thing we don't do is rocketry. Aberdeen Uni has its own rocketry society that is active and one of their rockets can be seen hanging in the foyer of the Fraser Noble building. Though they may seem similar, the approaches to rockety and aerospace are quite different and rocketry is specialised enough that it needs its own society and expertise. If you're interested in rocketry, get in touch with the rocketry society and they will give you a warm welcome.

Apart from that, we will plan regular meetings where we will be discussing the current state of affairs, project’s obstacles, ideas and deciding on the deadlines.

Furthermore, we will host several other events throughout the year for all members both social and educational as we see fit.

This is a great opportunity for students not only to gain hands-on experience in R&D, design, and manufacturing processes but also to practice critical thinking and teamwork. Members will be able to expand their knowledge in any and all areas of aerospace. If you've got the interest and the time, we're here to support you and aim higher as a society.

Aside from gaining practical experience (which is highly valued by employers), we aim for our members to have fun and enjoy the experience of working on and really taking ownership of projects.

For any questions please feel free to simply message us via the society email here.
