English Literature

Think you know your Chaucer from your Shakespeare? Your Emily Brontë from your Emily Dickinson? You often chat modernism and absurdism over your morning coffee?

Don't worry, that's not us (all the time). But if when you hear "My life was written by Samuel Beckett", you go "Aah, here's someone after my own heart", then you'd probably like our hang outs: where you can chat fanfiction in one corner of the room and Paradise Lost in the other, and often end up in the middle. Sounds like your kind of party? Then you're our kind of member!

We hold weekly events throughout the year, a mix of lectures (open to all, and exploring themes you might not hear in class) and socials (craft nights, games afternoons, picnics, movie nights), and end every month with a themed pub quiz in town (free to members!). This second term, we're planning:

  • 04/02 - 18:30 - NK10 - Adaptation: Lecture with Dr May Toudic: Aberdeen graduate, author and producer Dr May Toudic will talk about adapting classic literature, deviating from the source text, and what clicks and doesn't click in an adaptations. We'll head to the pub afterwards to chat and debrief!
  • 07/02 - 13:00 - MR613 - Adaptation: The Workshop: Building on Wednesday's lecture, we will brainstorm and workshop our own adaptations of books of our choosing. Everyone welcome!
  • 07/02 - 18:00 - MR051 - Adaptation: Film Screening: Join us after the workshop in MR051 to watch Adaptation!
  • 13/02 - 11:00-14:00 - Union Brew: Fancy a blind date with a book? We'll be selling some favourite second-hands at Union Brew!
  • 16/02 - Let's talk fanfiction: AO3, WattPad, Fanfic.net or Tumblr? Is it still fanfic if it's OCC? And is Paradise Lost a fanfiction of the Bible? We'll chat about all of that and more at our next roundtable discussion; everyone is welcome, and no need to come prepared!
  • 27/02 -  Sir Duncan Rice Library - Interdisciplinary LGBTQ+ History Month Symposium: With Postgraduate voices from Literature, Art History, History, Sociology and more!

Our membership fee is cheaper than many secondhand books, so don't hesitate to join us; we're a great bunch and a good laugh! Sign up to our newsletter or follow us to keep up to date with our events!
