Why have they reduced the hours that Taylor library is open for this semester? All students were asking for library hours to be extended for the past few years and the university have decided to go the opposite way! We need places to study outside of the main library and they need to be open from 8AM-8PM at least. It's now closed altogether on a Sunday which is a day for students who work on Saturdays to study.

Tell us more about why you want the Students' Union to do it

Not everyone can use the library comfortably (too much noise, too many people, no access to law resources). It's like the university is making studying less accessible. Open Taylor library back up and extend the hours of Sir Duncan to 24/7 at least a month before winter exams start! Two weeks of 24/7 library access is ridiculous for students that can't revise during daylight hours to prepare for the exams.

11:38am on 25 Sep 25 We need 24/7/365 as soon as possible, if other unis can do it, so can we.

2:26pm on 25 Sep 25 It should be 24 hours for both Taylor and Sir Duncan. Macrobert isn't convenient to study as its always overcrowded and some people would be loud as its not a silent zone. It's either too hot or too cold and Its very limited to move to other rooms during or before exams season.

11:36pm on 25 Sep 25 Both libraries if not at least Sir Duncan Rice should be open 24/7, it’s an amazing asset of the university and should be open to students as much as possible for both a safe and warm place, and a study space.

3:40pm on 13 Oct 25 We've been in contact with the Library via email over the past few weeks to understand the timeline of events that led to the reduction in hours of the Taylor Library. I've also met with the University Librarian, and with both the Deputy University Librarian and the Director of Digital and Information Services (which is the directorate that Library Services sits in). I have also brought it to the attention of the University Vice Principal (Education). As a result of all that, what I can say is that Library Services themselves are doing the best they can with the limited resources they have. Multiple staff have recently left, and due to the University-wide financial pressure, they have not been allocated money to recruit for all the previous posts. To compensate, they have redeployed some staff from the Taylor Library to maintain evening opening at SDRL. They have also made sure to maintain a level of evening opening at the Polwarth Library in Foresterhill, so that there is evening hours provision at both campuses. The next steps we are taking are to try and convince the University decision makers to restore resources to the library. We are still planning how we will go about doing so, and we wish to gain a better understanding of the resources and spaces that students require. Regarding 24h opening for the exam season, the University’s plan is to continue as it has over the last few years. Unfortunately, it is extremely unlikely to be extended beyond the two weeks during the exam diets due to the cost associated . I fully agree with you that we would much rather have longer opening hours, and we are doing our utmost to rectify this situation. Kind regards, Samuel (Vice President for Education)
