All suggestions that reach 10 votes or more, will receive a written response from the officer page, outlining how we will respond or are already responding to the SU-ggestion, or what factors mean we might not be able to implement the suggestion.

If your idea relates to the establishment of a policy and reaches 30 votes or more, it will be considered for a debate at our Student Council.

Inclusion of Parenting and Carer Spaces Across All Campuses We propose the establishment of Parenting and Carer Spaces throughout all campuses to support the diverse needs of students, staff, and visitors who are parents or carers. These spaces would provide a private, safe, and comfortable environment for activities such as chestfeeding or bottle feeding, regulating and caring for children, and attending to their toileting needs. Desired amenities include: A comfortable nursing chair and seating for carers. Access to plug sockets suitable for electric pumps or other feeding equipment. Access to a refrigerator for safe short-term storage of expressed milk. Suitable changing facilities for infants and young children. Appropriate hygiene standards and regular maintenance to ensure a clean, welcoming environment.

Tell us more about why you want the Students' Union to do it

No one should have to make the decision between providing for their children and pursuing their education. However, it has been highlighted to the Disabled Students Forum that this is precisely the dilemma some students and carers are currently facing. The lack of dedicated parenting and carer spaces can create significant barriers for those balancing study with caregiving responsibilities. Establishing these spaces would help ensure that all students have equitable access to education and campus life, regardless of their caring responsibilities. Many other universities have already recognised this need and have introduced designated parenting and carer rooms that provide safe, private, and inclusive facilities for feeding, changing, and caring for children. Implementing similar spaces across our campuses would demonstrate our commitment to accessibility, inclusion, and the wellbeing of our community.
