What happens to my suggestion?

All suggestions that reach 10 votes or more within 4 weeks, will receive a written response from the officers, outlining how we will respond or are already responding to the SU-ggestion, or what factors mean we might not be able to implement the suggestion.

If your idea relates to the establishment of a policy and reaches 30 votes or more within 4 weeks, it will be considered for a debate at our Student Council.

We would be able to keep the libraries open for longer, even for 24 hours for longer eventually, if we allowed students to volunteer to work at the library. It takes the funding issue into account.

Tell us more about why you want the Students' Union to do it

This will allow the library to be open for longer meaning students can actually study for longer and it allows students to get work experience.

11:09am on 5 Dec 25 Thank you for posting this. I have raised it with the University Librarian, and there are a few reasons this is difficult to implement. Staffing the service points is only one of the costs associated with opening the libraries, alongside heating, mechanical ventilation, and lighting, and security staff. The security issue is particularly impactful given how many staff have left under VS/ER over the last couple of years. This means that even with volunteer staff, there would still be a cost associated with longer opening. The University is looking at improving the Taylor hours, however this is still not confirmed due to the budget constraints. I hope this provides some clarity.
