Urgent Need to Reopen the Top Floor of Polwarth Library

This is an urgent request to reopen the top floor of Polwarth Library. It has been closed for a long time, with no clear communication (at least to our knowledge), about when—or if—it will reopen. With student intake increasing every year, particularly in courses such as Medicine, students based at Foresterhill are being left without adequate study spaces once the library/(Suttie)computer room reaches capacity. As a result, many students are forced to arrive very early simply to secure a seat in the computer room so they have somewhere to study. One of the reasons the top floor has not yet been refurbished and reopened is the perceived lack of visible student demand. The more interest and support we show, the stronger our case becomes. Reopening this space would significantly increase study capacity, reduce pressure on the computer room, and save many students from having to travel all the way to the Sir Duncan Rice Library. The situation is expected to worsen from next term, as first-year medical students will have their lectures at Foresterhill. This will place even greater strain on the already limited study spaces, leaving many students without a suitable place to study on campus. Reopening the top floor would help relieve this pressure and better meet the needs of students at Foresterhill. This also strengthen the earlier case for extending evening transport times. More students would be able to study late on the Foresterhill campus, knowing they can rely on safe and reliable transport between Foresterhill and Polwarth. This would not only improve accessibility but also enhance student safety.

Tell us more about why you want the Students' Union to do it

I hope the SU can show the librarians that there is a clear and growing demand for the reopening of the top floor of Polwarth Library. Wanting to study on campus and being unable to find a space is extremely discouraging, which is why many students leave immediately after lectures. Others do not come to the Foresterhill library at all, due to the lack of available spaces or the perception that there will be nowhere to study.
