Socialism vs Capitalism Debate
Join us for a debate on one of the most hotly contested issues of all time...
What will the debate be about
This debate is about Capitalism as opposed to Socialism. What this means is that both benches must defend mutually exclusive economic systems or ideologies. The exact definitions of these two systems are down to the speakers to define, but they can broadly be thought of in the following ways:
Capitalism is a broad set of beliefs which prioritise private ownership, are broadly motivated by profit, individualistic thinking and the accumulation of personal wealth. Capitalism has many forms which often vary in degrees of state intervention, ranging from free-market capitalism, welfare capitalism to a system in which the state runs industries generally deemed to be monopolistic in nature.
Socialism is a broad set of beliefs which prioritise social ownership (i.e state ownership or co-operative business structures) and which often de-prioritise profit as a primary motivator of economic activity. Socialism has many forms, and can take a revolutionary or reformist strategy. Some socialists defend free markets as a good system of resource distribution, provided that the primary players within said markets are socially owned, while others claim that a socialist economy must be centrally planned.
The Format
Our 6 speakers will argue extensively for both sides in 5 minute speeches. After, you will be given the opportunity to give a 3 minute floor speech, if you would like to.
We will then have closing remarks from both sides in 3 minute speeches from one speaker on each side. You will then be allowed to give your vote at the end.
If you have other points you want to say we also have a pub social after the round is over.
