NK11 (New King's)

Thursday 09 October 2025 at 5pm - 7pm

Join the History Society in commemorating Black History Month with a lecture on the history of hip hop!

📅 Date: 9th October, 2025
🕒 Time: 17:00-19:00
📍 Location: NK11 (New King's)

Join the History Society for our upcoming lecture, Money, Power, Respect: Hip Hop and American Power, presented by Dr Owen Walsh.

"Since its inception 50 years ago, hip-hop has had a notoriously conflicted relationship with commerce, capitalism, and US power. Hip-hop has always existed as a business, but it has also been a vehicle for Black protest and pedagogy. This tension has resulted in innumerable proclamations of its death, yet rap music remains the pre-eminent musical form on the world stage. In this lecture, I will trace the vexed trajectory from hip-hop revolution to rap empire."

This event is free and open to both members and non-members – no tickets required! After the lecture there will be an informal chat session where you’ll have the chance to ask questions and continue the discussion.

We look forward to seeing you there!
