Join the History Society for a lecture on heroes and villains!

📅 Date: 13th November, 2025
🕒 Time: 17:00-19:00
📍 Location: NK11 (New King's)

Join the History Society for our upcoming lecture, Heroes and Villains: Looting the Brunswick Residence in 1830, presented by Dr Heidi Mehrkens.

On 7 September 1830, Duke Charles of Brunswick lost his throne when angry citizens stormed his residence and set fire to it. The driving force behind the Brunswick Revolution was not to install a new political system, let alone republicanism, but to get rid of an unloved ruler. Well, and maybe there was a chance to become rich in the process, with the castle’s silver spoons all there for the taking…This talk will focus on how order was restored following the upheaval, and how looting citizens blossomed into selfless heroes - and yes, we’ll meet the villains, too!

This event is free and open to both members and non-members – no tickets required! After the lecture there will be an informal chat session where you’ll have the chance to ask questions and continue the discussion.

We look forward to seeing you there!
