Filmshowing with free pizza!: ‘Albert Schweitzer’ , Tuesday 1st Oct, 18:00, MacRobert 268.
Albert Schweitzer, Noble Peace Prize winner, is a medical missionary in Africa, a philosopher, a musician, and a believer in his own interpretation of god. His `Reverence for Life´ is a very short summary of a moral philosophy which places humanity first, without putting the human in the center of all consideration. At first sight the film is about a doctor trying to raise money for Lambarene, his hospital in African rainforest. At second sight we see the conflict between old believes and new ones, the difficulties of cold war, the struggle for freedom of speech and opinion, and the need of humanity in times of the beginning of atomic bombs.
Discussion: What is it to be human?: Wednesday 2nd Oct, 19:00 Spooky Grave, 19:30 Blue Lamp.
Is it a mere matter of biology or is there something else that makes us human. Are our advanced systems of communications what differentiate us from other animals, and even other people. Is the backbone for our society our morals and laws and this that categorise us as human. What is it to be human, who among us are human?
PhilSoccer: Saturday 5th Oct, 11:30 meeting at Spooky Grave, 12:00noon kick off at Seaton Crescent football pitches. Our first match of our friendly charity matches will be against the Juggling Society, come down for the spectacle or join in!
