Let's make our university experience the best it can be, together!
Introduction
Hi everyone,
I'm Isaac Baah Antwi, studying MSc (Econ) in Accounting and Finance. You might've seen me helping out with the English Language Support Programme. As an international student myself, I get the challenges you face – finding housing, managing money, and fitting in.
I'm running for Welfare because I want to make student life easier for all of us. If you vote for me, you're voting for someone who gets it and is committed to making positive changes for everyone.
Thanks for considering me. Let's make our university experience the best it can be, together!
What are your three priorities for the year?
Ensuring Easy Access to Affordable Accommodation:
I will strive to advocate for affordable and accessible accommodation options both on and off-campus. Drawing from my own experiences as an international student, I understand the challenges associated with finding suitable accommodation. I will work closely with university management to establish support systems for international students, expand affordable housing options, and ensure disability-friendly accommodations with essential amenities.
Developing Comprehensive Student Well-being Programs:
My team and I will design holistic well-being programs addressing various aspects of student life, including social, physical, emotional, and academic well-being. These programs will include stress management workshops, career guidance sessions, cultural exploration tours, and a range of activities to promote wellness among students.
Enhancing Mental Health Support Services:
I am committed to improving mental health support services on campus by raising awareness, encouraging students to utilize counseling centers, and expanding therapy sessions availability. Destigmatizing mental health issues will be a key focus through awareness campaigns, workshops, and events promoting open discussions and education on mental well-being.
What unique skill/knowledge can you bring to the role to stand out from the other candidates?
One unique skill/knowledge that I bring to the role is my experience as both a student and a volunteer with the English Language Support Programme (ELSP). This has provided me with firsthand insights into the challenges that students face, particularly those who are international or transitioning to university life.
Additionally, my background in accounting and finance equips me with valuable skills in management, planning, and funds allocation. I can apply these skills to effectively advocate for student welfare and allocate resources efficiently to address their needs.
Moreover, my commitment to transparency, accountability, and collaboration ensures that I will be approachable and responsive to students' concerns. I believe this combination of experiences, skills, and values uniquely qualifies me to make a positive impact as Welfare candidate.
What do you think is the biggest issue that students are facing at the moment and how do you plan to tackle it?
The biggest issue students are facing right now is mental health. Many of us feel overwhelmed by academic pressure, financial stress, and the challenges of adjusting to university life, especially during the pandemic.
To tackle this, I plan to:
Increase awareness about mental health through campaigns and workshops.
Expand counseling services on campus, making it easier for students to get help.
Create peer support networks so students can help each other.
Collaborate with university and government resources to develop comprehensive mental health strategies.
By working together, we can create a supportive environment where every student feels valued and cared for.
