Empowering Diversity, Enriching Community: Together, We Thrive!

Introduction

I am honored to present myself as a candidate for Student Vice President (Welfare) in this year's student officer elections. As a Ghanaian student pursuing an MSc in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, I bring a unique blend of academic expertise, professional experience, and a deep commitment to serving our university community.

Hailing from Ghana, a land rich in culture and resilience, I carry with me the values of perseverance, diversity, and community. My journey to the University of Aberdeen has been shaped by my passion for biotechnology and molecular biology, leading me to pursue a bachelor's degree in the field and gain invaluable experience working in a university medical laboratory. These experiences have not only honed my scientific skills but have also instilled in me a strong sense of responsibility towards using my knowledge for the betterment of society.

What are your three priorities for the year?

1. Advocating for International Student Support: As an international student myself, I understand the unique challenges and opportunities we face. My priority will be to advocate for enhanced support services tailored to the needs of international students, including academic, cultural, and mental health support.

2. Promoting Research and Innovation: With a backgroound in biotechnology and bioinformatics, I am passionate about fostering a culture of research and innovation on campus. I will work to create more opportunities for students to engage in cutting-edge research projects and collaborate with faculty members to drive forward scientific discoveries.

3. Strengthening Communty Engagement: Building a strong sense of community is essential for the holistic development of our university. I will strive to enhance community engagement initiatives, such as student-led events, cultural exchanges, and volunteer programs, to foster meaningful connections among students from diverse backgrounds.

What unique skill/knowledge can you bring to the role to stand out from the other candidates?

My experience working in Ghana’s premier university’s medical laboratory, combined with my academic background in biotechnology and molecular biology, equips me with a deep understanding of scientific principles and research methodologies. Additionally, my leadership experience and qualities, honed through various extracurricular activities and previous roles, enable me to effectively advocate for student interests and drive positive change within our university community.

What do you think is the biggest issue that students are facing at the moment and how do you plan to tackle it?

One of the most pressing issues facing students today is the need for greater support and resources in navigating the challenges of academic and personal life, especially in the midst of the ongoing global pandemic. As your candidate for Student Vice President (Welfare) I am committed to addressing this issue by advocating for enhanced support services, promoting mental health awareness, and facilitating peer-to-peer support networks.
