  • Put a jumper on or snuggle up with one of our free hot water bottles instead of turning the heating up or using an electric heater
  • Make sure your radiators are not obstructed by furniture or curtains
  • Close your curtains at dusk to keep heat energy in and open curtains at dawn to let sunlight heat up the room
  • Use energy saving light bulbs
  • Use timers to control when your heating is on and switch it off if the temperature reaches the comfortable 19-21 °C
  • Don’t leave fridge door open and defrost fridges and freezers regularly
  • Turn electronics such as TVs and laptops off properly when you’re not using them, don’t just leave them on standby
  • Turn off all the lights when you leave a room
  • Only boil the amount of water you need when you use a kettle
  • When you’re charging your phone, unplug it as soon as it is fully charged
  • Learn how to use the timers on your boiler to control when your heating comes on
  • Wash clothes at 30°C instead of 60°C if possible and only wash full loads (washing clothes at 40°C rather than 60°C can reduce carbon emissions by a third)
  • Don’t use a tumble dryer, hang clothes up to dry indoors away from radiators or in your garden
  • Let leftover food cool down before putting it in the fridge and make sure the fridge door is closed properly
  • Use pans which are the same size as your cooker rings
  • Always put lids on saucepans
