Below The Line Film Festival: Experimental Self

New Kings - NK1

Thursday 23 March 2023 at 6pm - 9pm

The films selected for the final weeks of Below the line exhibit the potential of experimental filmmaking. The flexible nature of experimental praxis means that there are fewer controls dictating how filmmakers should capture and display their subject matter in comparison to the formal and commercial constraints of the mainstream cinema industry. The films which will be screened as part of Experimental Self make use of experimental praxis to present women/non-men as a self which is subject rather than object.

This Thursday we're watching and discussing El Diablo en la Piel/Devil in the flesh (Ximena Cuevas, 1998) and Surname Viet Given Name Nam (Trinh T. Minh-ha, 1989).
