About the speaker: Prof Carol Munro is an ex-graduate of the University of Aberdeen in PhD Molecular Analysis of Chitin Synthesis in Candida albicans in 1997. Currently, she is a lecturer and a course coordinator of four courses at the School of Medicine, Medical Sciences and Nutrition. Her research focuses on investigating fungi, their interactions with the host, antifungal drug resistance and genetic variability among fungal isolates, mostly on Candida species, that cause life-threatening and multi-drug resistant infections in humans with impaired immune function. In collaboration with Scottish Biologics Facility, she filed a patient on a fungal cell wall targeting antibodies that protect fungal models. To help fight the pandemic she opened a Biological Containment Level 3 viral laboratory to work on the SARS-CoV-2 virus where they set up an assay to measure the antiviral activity of compounds and treatments. Besides her research, she is very active in scientific organisations. She is deputy editor-in-chief of FEMS Yeast Research, a FEMS delegate for the Microbiology Society, a member of the Microbiology Society Impact & Influence Committee and an honorary member of the British Society for Medical Mycology.
