Freshers Volunteers

 

AUSA needs YOU!

As another Freshers’ event approaches, we are looking for volunteers to help to ensure the event is as successful as possible and provides students with a memorable experience!

AUSA has many volunteer opportunities on offer so please have a look at the below roles to see if any of them might be the perfect one for you! If you have any questions or queries about any of the below, please don’t hesitate to contact societies@abdn.ac.uk

We are looking for volunteers between the 13th of September until the 26th of September!

More details are available below but the roles available are: welfare rep, student feedback working group rep, Event Assistant, Content Creator and an AUSA alumni assistant.

This is a fantastic opportunity which is open to all students and a chance to use your experience of freshers to help improve and enhance the freshers’ week experience for future students!

Volunteering is a great way to enhance your skills and is something that can set students above other candidates when applying for jobs.

Welfare Representative

Responsibilities:

  • Provide students with the relevant signposting materials both internally from the university and externally that can help to support them during their first weeks as a student.
  • Provide care packages to students on campus where possible.
  • Help AUSA to provide a welcoming atmosphere to the students when on campus to ensure that they feel supported.
  • Offer students the chance to meet each other through helping AUSA staff to organise meet and greet sessions both online and face to face depending on circumstances.
  • Assist AUSA to ensure events are accessible to all.

Please note, this role will not involve solving welfare issues. It will only be about supporting students so that they feel welcomed into the university and are provided with the relevant resources if they need them.

Skills and qualities that we are looking for:

  • Effective interpersonal skills, approachable and can communicate clearly to other individuals.
  • Effective timekeeping skills and can work as part of a team.
  • Caring individual that likes to help others.

Enhanced skills by end of position:

  • Communication skills will be enhanced.
  • Will gain experience in working as part of both small and large teams.
  • Interpersonal skills will be enhanced.

 

Student Feedback representative

Responsibilities:

  • Attend freshers focus groups to provide feedback on the best way to ensure freshers’ success!
  • Support staff to create evaluation materials and surveys to receive student feedback both before and after freshers’ week.
  • Create interactive ways to communicate with students throughout the 2 weeks so that AUSA can evaluate what is going well and what might need to be improved.
  • Work with the AUSA staff and volunteers to evaluate the event as a whole to put together the improvements that should be put in place for future years based on student feedback and the overall success of the event.

Skills and qualities that we are looking for:

  • Good interpersonal skills, approachable and can communicate clearly to other individuals.
  • Looking for someone that is creative and can think outside the box when needed.
  • Effective at working as part of a team.
  • Experience in attending or assisting a student event before is desirable but not essential.
  • Great role for an individual interested in going into the marketing industry or equivalent in the future.

Enhanced skills by end of position:

  • Communication skills
  • Enhanced public speaking skills
  • Event planning and evaluation 

 

Event Assistant (multiple positions are available)

  • Event assistants support AUSA to deliver Freshers' events. While there are many tasks within these roles, you will be put on those that best suit your skills.
  • We would like student representatives from main campus, Forresterhill and Qatar to support

Responsibilities:

  • Supporting AUSA staff and sabbatical officers to set up and implement various on campus events that are organised throughout the 2 weeks to ensure they are successful.
  • Assist with promoting events through handing out flyers and encouraging students to attend the various freshers’ events.
  • Help to ensure that all students are kept safe during all events that take place on campus.
  • Help to organise any online events that are organised by AUSA to ensure that all students are given a chance to be involved whether they are on campus or not.

Skills and qualities that we are looking for:

  • Good interpersonal skills, approachable and can communicate clearly to other individuals.
  • Effective at working as part of a team.
  • Effective at adapting to situation changes when needed.
  • Effective time keeping skills are essential.
  • Experience in attending or assisting a student event before is desirable but not essential.

Enhanced skills by end of position:

  • Event planning, implementing and evaluation skills
  • Health and safety knowledge
  • Interpersonal and communication skills
  • Teamworking

 

Content Creator (multiple positions are available)

Responsibilities:

  • Support AUSA staff to create content for freshers’ which creates a buzz for the event amongst all students.
  • Come up with innovative ways to reach out to all students to promote the activities organised throughout the event.
  • Take photos or videos throughout the event to showcase all the events that are going on. Camera / video experience would be desirable but not essential.
  • Assist AUSA staff to keep the AUSA social media pages up to date with relevant and attractive content throughout the event.

Skills and qualities that we are looking for:

  • Experience with various social media platforms.
  • Creative mindset and effective at coming up with new and innovative ideas.
  • Experience with creating and editing videos would be desirable but not essential.
  • Clear communication skills.

Enhanced skills by the end of position:

  • Social media skills
  • Creative thinking and being able to be innovative in different situations
  • Communication skills

 

 

AUSA Alumni Assistant

Responsibilities:

Are you an Aberdeen University alumni but would like to stay involved and help AUSA to enhance the experience for students during freshers’ week? If so, we have the perfect opportunity for you to be involved. Please see the below tasks that you may be asked to support AUSA staff with.

  • Providing feedback on what you think worked well and could have been improved throughout the events so improvements can be made.
  • Assist with events that have been organised by AUSA, the main task will be to make sure students feel welcomed to each event and where possible that we set them up to speak to new people / friends.
  • Question and answer sessions with alumni may be useful to get a different perspective rather than only staff telling them everything. There will be no pressure to do this though if you don’t want to.

Skills and qualities that we are looking for:

  • Good interpersonal skills, approachable and can communicate clearly to other individuals.
  • Graduate of Aberdeen University
  • General understanding / experience of Freshers week.

Enhanced skills from role:

  • Interpersonal skills
  • Communications skills
  • Increased experience in working as part of a team to achieve results
