English Literature

Think you know your Chaucer from your Shakespeare? Your Emily Brontë from your Emily Dickinson? You often chat modernism and absurdism over your morning coffee?

Don't worry, that's not us (all the time). But if when you hear "My life was written by Samuel Beckett", you go "Aah, here's someone after my own heart", then you'd probably like our hang outs: where you can chat fanfiction in one corner of the room and Paradise Lost in the other, and often end up in the middle. Sounds like your kind of party? Then you're our kind of member!

We hold weekly events throughout the year, a mix of lectures (open to all, and exploring themes you might not hear in class) and socials (craft nights, games afternoons, picnics, movie nights), and end every month with a themed pub quiz in town (free to members!). This month, we're planning:

  • 13/04 - 17:00 - Chaplaincy's Lounge - LiTEArary Chat: Bookish Pet Peeves: What makes you close a book? Give up your reading? Pull a face and throw it across the room (don't do that)? For our first LiTEArary Chat of the month, we're talking bookish pet peeves!
  • 15/04 - 14:00 - Sir Duncan Rice Library - Collections' Close Up: Ever wondered what literary culture looked like in the 16th century? What is the oldest book in the university's collection? What goes on under Sir Duncan Rice Library? This 45 minutes collection close-up led by Jane Pirie (Rare Books) is your opportunity to ask all you've ever wanted to know about the archives. Tickets available here.
  • 15/04 - 15:00 - Sir Duncan Rice Library - Bookbinding Workshop: Members only! This 45 minutes workshop will be led by Brannah Mackenzie (Paper Conservator), who will teach you how to create your own mini-book! Tickets available here.
  • 19/04 - 10:00-17:00 - Elphinstone Lawn - RenFaire: LitSoc is teaming up with AURA and many other societies for an unforgettable Spring RenFaire! Come along for archery, swordfighting, woodworking, our very own Wizard Battle and many more! Tickets are £5 at the door; dress up is encouraged but not mandatory!
  • 19/04 - 19:00 - Elphinstone Hall - A Romeo & Juliet Ball: And to crown the day after the RenFaire, we're organising a Romeo & Juliet-themed dance. Will you join the Capulets or the Montagues? Are you choosing love or your family's pride? We'll have some ceilidh dancing, loyalties will be revealed, betrayals celebrated, and finish the night with a dance! Tickets are £7 at the door, or £5 from our RenFaire stall (discounts available for LitSoc members and members of associated societies).
  • 20/04 - 17:00 - Chaplaincy's Hall - NUART x LITSOC: LiTEArary Chat: It's poetry time! To celebrate the NUART festival coming back to Aberdeen, we will be talking about this year's theme: "Poetry on the streets".
  • 24/04 - 17:00 - Room TBA - NUART x LITSOC: The Odyssey with Dr Sam Newington: Our last lecture of the year is by the formidable Sam Newington, who for the NUART festival will talk to us about one of the oldest and most famous epic poems: The Odyssey, by Homer.

Our membership fee is cheaper than many secondhand books, so don't hesitate to join us; we're a great bunch and a good laugh! Click here to join the WhatsApp group chat, sign up to our newsletter or follow us to keep up to date with our events!
