Following recent decisions around AUSA's Pro-Choice Policy, we would like to address a few of the most frequently asked questions. If you have any further questions, please feel free to e-mail one of the Sabbs or ausa@abdn.ac.uk.

Does AUSA have a pro-choice policy?

A pro-choice policy was passed by the Student Council in 2017. Recently, concerns were brought to the Trustee Board about the legalities of this policy citing the equalities act of 2010. In response, the Trustee Board were required to suspend the policy until the Student Council has the opportunity to rephrase the problematic wording to bring the policy in line with the relevant legislation.

What action is being taken against AUSA in the courts?

A writ has been served against AUSA, filed by an individual. This is being progressed through legal channels and as such, it would not be appropriate to comment on it further at this stage.

Was a life ethics society allowed to affiliate?

A life ethics society was affiliated to AUSA in May 2019 as they met all the requirements to become a society. Decisions on whether or not to affiliate societies are taken by the Societies Union Committee comprising of students. All societies, sports clubs, and groups must abide by Byelaw 19 which requires compliance with the Safe Space Policy, No Platform Policy and the use of sensitive content warnings where appropriate.

Do societies receive money and other benefits from AUSA?

No societies, sports clubs or student groups are automatically provided with any funds from AUSA. Decisions on which groups receive grants are taken by a student committee based on grant applications received and whether they meet the qualifying criteria. All societies must be self-sustaining in their first year and cannot apply for any funding during this time but can access and book the rooms available to societies, sports clubs, and student groups.

What is AUSA’s current stance on abortion?

AUSA remains a pro-choice organisation and strongly supports the values that this represents but accepts the right of all students to form their own views on this matter. AUSA will continue to advocate non-directional advice on unplanned pregnancy and support the rights of students to make their own decisions on these matters.
