The Soka Gakkai International (SGI) is a community-based Buddhist organization, based on core Buddhist principles such as respecting the dignity of human life and the interconnectedness of self and the environment. SGI engages in various peace activities, including human rights education, the movement to abolish nuclear weapons and efforts to promote sustainable development. We believe that each person’s life contains infinite potential. While it may be easy to accept this in a theoretical sense, in reality we tend to impose limits on our possibilities. We tend to live quite comfortably within our own self-imposed limits, but when we come up against a problem or challenge and we feel we lack the ability to overcome it, we suffer. We feel overwhelmed or afraid.

Through this Buddhist practice we want to enable each and every student to draw on inexhaustible inner reserves of courage, hope and resilience to surmount challenges and expand our lives and to help others do the same. When we, as individuals, change, that transformation influences the people around us, as well as our environment. We no longer need to feel powerless or unable to make a difference. Instead, with this new society we want to make everyone feel empowered and be confident that our own inner change for the better changes the outside world for the better. In a nutshell, we, as a new society, would love to be able to share this philosophy, creating an inclusive dialogue between people from no matter which background to encourage everyone to be the best version of themselves.
