#Diverse Voices, Inclusive Choices

Introduction

Greetings, everyone. My name is Clement Bosin, and I'm running for the position of Vice President for Activities. Currently, I am pursuing my Master's in Geographic Information Systems. As an international student from Nigeria, I've personally faced the challenges of adapting to a new environment, notably the isolation that can come without a network of friends or connections. My goal is to enrich the University of Aberdeen by transforming it into a vibrant and inclusive hub for both learning and socializing. Together, we can make our campus a place where every student feels welcomed and valued, fostering an environment rich with memorable experiences. Let us collaborate to bring positive change and ensure our university is a place of unity and excitement.

What are your three priorities for the year?

1. Enhance Cultural Integration and Inclusivity

Organize a series of cultural exchange events and workshops that celebrate diversity and promote understanding among students from various backgrounds.

2. Boost Campus Vibe with Engaging Activities

Increase the frequency and variety of campus events to cater to a wide range of interests. This could include outdoor movie nights, themed social events, inter-departmental and school sports competitions, and interactive fairs that encourage participation and create a buzz on campus. Collaboration with different student societies can help diversify the events offered.

3. Expand Networking Opportunities for All Students

Create platforms for professional development, such as career fairs that are targeted at students, guest speaker series, and networking events with alumni. This initiative could involve partnerships with local businesses and professional organizations to provide students with real-world connections, jobs, and internship opportunities.

What unique skill/knowledge can you bring to the role to stand out from the other candidates?

I am a person who values support, adaptability, and a relaxed approach. I am always open to listening, learning, and taking action. My friendly nature makes collaboration seamless across diverse groups. Drawing from my own life's journey and the hurdles I've encountered, I've gained a deep understanding of student needs on campus. I am committed to fostering an environment where, despite any obstacles, students can flourish and find happiness. This commitment is at the core of my mission to enhance campus life for every student.

What do you think is the biggest issue that students are facing at the moment and how do you plan to tackle it?

Students currently face a pronounced crisis due to rising living costs, exacerbated by limited availability of jobs and internships in the community. This situation not only places financial strain on students but also restricts their opportunities for gaining valuable work experience. This dual challenge not only strains their finances but also hampers their ability to gain crucial work experience. My strategy to address this involves advocating for the establishment of a university-community partnership program to increase access to affordable living options and create a dedicated portal for local job and internship opportunities tailored specifically for students, thereby enhancing their financial stability and professional development. I also propose working closely with the university to establish student apprenticeship programs and foster partnerships with educational financial support agencies in the UK for sponsorship and educational loans.
