Together, we can make the university a better place for you!

Introduction

Hi, my name is Allie, and I am running for the position of Vice President for Welfare!

I am a mature student in my final year studying History of Art, and am currently the Vice-President of the newly started Art History Society. When I started my degree in 2020, I was diagnosed through the University with ADHD, dyslexia and dysgraphia, and as such I have experienced first-hand how essential the support services, and welfare support in general, are to students!

I have had a very varied mix of experiences, including:

> Working in stage management, including with local community groups

> a (very brief) stint in the Royal Navy

> Working as an Activity Manager in an EFL Summer Camp

> Completing an internship with the University of Aberdeen's Events Team

> Volunteering with organisations such as the National Trust and Oxfam

> Establishing volunteering opportunities within the university for students

I know how challenging university is (this is my third attempt, and I'm finally on track to graduate!), and I also know how stressful and difficult life outside of university can be, and I want to put all of my previous experiences to helping support students and representing them when their voices need to be heard!

What are your three priorities for the year?

  1. Support and campaign for students struggling with the cost of living crisis
  2. Campaign for consistent support for learning difficulties and mental health issues across departments and across both campuses and for students studying online
  3. Support and campaign for International students to make sure they are heard, and help foster community across campuses and online

What unique skill/knowledge can you bring to the role to stand out from the other candidates?

Whilst I was completing basic training in the Royal Navy, I undertook the role of Mess Bosun for the female recruits - for those unfamiliar with the role/terminology, the Mess Bosun is in charge of the welfare of their fellow recruits and acts as a liaison with the divisional officers. My job was to ensure everyone was supported when they needed it; through homesickness, and conflicts with other recruits, advocated for them to the divisional officers, and at times helped calm panic and anxiety attacks when training was particularly stressful.

I believe this experience puts me in a unique position to fulfil the role of VP for Welfare in the student body's best interests!

What do you think is the biggest issue that students are facing at the moment and how do you plan to tackle it?

I think the main issue that students from all backgrounds face is the current cost of living crisis.

Students are experiencing considerable financial stress, which massively impacts their mental health and quality of life. Ensuring students know how to access mental health resources and discretionary funds and can do so without feeling any shame or stigma is essential.

I want to ensure that this fund stays in place for students to access so that they can maximise their student experience!
