Introduction

Hello,

I am Merris, a MSc student studying Strategic Studies & Energy Security. My goal is to champion the perspectives and needs of all University of Aberdeen students by introducing fresh and inclusive initiatives where every voice is valued.

However, I recognize that I cannot accomplish this alone. It is through our collective support that we can shape the future we aspire to see.

What are your three priorities for the year?

1. Immediate Solutions for Student Housing

The main concern currently for students, including myself and others, is securing suitable accommodation close to the University. Some students have faced delays with their visas, resulting in late arrivals and have no choice but to settle for housing far from campus with long commuting periods. I plan to provide immediate solutions through the following 3 key strategies.
i. Collaborate with both on and off-campus housing organizations to ensure students are aware of available options, and to provide support so that no student feels isolated in navigating housing in a new environment.
ii. Peer-to-Peer Housing Network: Create a peer-to-peer housing network or online platform where students can connect with each other to find roommates, sublet opportunities, or shared accommodation arrangements. This can help students pool resources and find housing options more quickly.
iii. Partner with local hotels, hostels, or temporary accommodation providers to secure short-term housing options for students who are struggling to find accommodation. Negotiate discounted rates or special arrangements for university students.

2. Mental Health & Community building

Together with the University’s commitment to caring for the wellbeing, health, and safety of its diverse community, I plan to create innovative ideas such as

i. Community Building Events: Organize community-building events such as social gatherings, cultural celebrations, and hobby groups to foster a sense of belonging and connection among students.
ii. Create Safe Spaces: Designate safe spaces on campus where students can relax, de-stress, and engage in activities that promote well-being. These spaces can be equipped with comfortable seating, calming decorations, and resources for mental health support.

What unique skill/knowledge can you bring to the role to stand out from the other candidates?

During my undergraduate studies in the U.S., I served as a Student Advisor for Inclusive Excellence, collaborating with the President's cabinet on diversity and inclusion initiatives for both local and international students. I mentored underrepresented students, facilitated student volunteering, and organized employability and skills development opportunities.

Currently, at the postgraduate level, I contribute as a Unibuddy Ambassador and ESLP volunteer with UOA, assisting international students with conversational English practice and engaging prospective students worldwide through peer chat platforms to share my experiences and aid in their decision-making process.

What do you think is the biggest issue that students are facing at the moment and how do you plan to tackle it?

Some students are facing challenges with coursework submission deadlines, leading to stress, especially among disabled or neurodiverse students, international students, online and/or part-time students, and joint honors students. I plan to work closely with the school management to ensure clarity and support for all UOA students in their studies, thereby reducing associated stress by implementing an institutional extension policy for TAUGHT postgraduate and undergraduate students, providing a standardized approach to consider extension requests.
