Student life should be fun, inclusive, and more exciting than just free coffee during exams.

Introduction
Hey everyone! I’m Maira Khurram , and I’m running for VP Activities because, quite frankly, student life could use a serious upgrade. Right now, the most exciting thing on campus is the occasional free pizza at society fairs (and let’s be real, even that disappears in 30 seconds).
I believe university should be more than just lectures, library marathons, and pretending you understand your coursework. Whether you’re looking for a vibrant social life, a niche hobby, or just something to do that isn’t doom-scrolling TikTok, I want to make sure there’s something for everyone.
What are your three priorities for the year?
Bringing Events to All Campuses & Hillhead – Because fun shouldn’t be exclusive to Old Aberdeen. Whether you’re at Foresterhill, Hillhead, or somewhere in between, you deserve great events without having to travel through the Aberdeen rain.
More Funding & Less Hassle for Societies – Societies shouldn’t have to beg, borrow, or steal (okay, maybe just borrow) to run good events. I’ll push for bigger budgets, easier funding applications, and better promotion so societies can focus on what they do best—creating amazing experiences for students.
Bigger, Better, and Less Awkward Events – More student-led activities, cultural festivals, game nights, live performances—you name it! Plus, we’ll work on fixing those events that feel like forced fun. Because nobody enjoys an event where five people show up and spend the night avoiding eye contact.
What unique skill/knowledge can you bring to the role to stand out from the other candidates?
Aside from my ability to survive 9 am lectures on minimal sleep? I’ve actually organized and run events, so I know how to make them fun, engaging, and worth your time. I’m also a natural problem-solver—if something isn’t working, I’ll find a way to fix it. And most importantly, I listen to students—because this is about your experience, not just what looks good on a poster.
What do you think is the biggest issue that students are facing at the moment and how do you plan to tackle it?
Right now, students are struggling to find events that actually interest them—or even know what’s happening at all! My plan:
More Free & Low-Cost Events – So you don’t have to choose between a fun night out and affording your next Tesco meal deal.
A Smarter Event Calendar – No more scrolling through endless Facebook pages to find what’s on. A centralized, easy-to-use system will make it simple to discover events near you.
Collabs Between Societies – Bigger events, better turnouts, and more opportunities to meet people outside your usual circle.
